Tropical Storm Emily
I’ve been tracking Emily since before she had a name and she was just a little tropical wave off the coast of Africa. As a surfer on the east coast, it’s the time of the year where I really start to pay attention to the tropics. I waited to put a post up about Emily until now because I didn’t want to jinx our chance of getting waves and even now I’m still a little worried. Emily is currently weakening as she makes her way over Hispaniola but she’s got the potential to send us some decent swell.
As Tropical Storm Emily makes her way through the Caribbean, over Hispaniola and Cuba, and then into the Bahamas she will struggle to stay organized and weaken as most storms do when they encounter land. However, once Emily moves back into open waters north of the Bahamas and off the east coast of Florida the forecasts show that she will once again strengthen and possibly reach Hurricane status.
Ideally what we want is for Emily to already be East of where she is and come right up the coast between North Carolina and Bermuda but her current track will still send us some waves once the storm reaches open waters off the coast of OBX sometime on Monday.
It’s still a few days out but I’m predicting to see the beginnings swell from Emily late Sunday into Monday with the main swell to fill in on Tuesday. As it is with most storms, keep your fingers crossed and don’t hype it up too much.
Keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center’s website along with Weather Underground’s Tropical Weather page for up to date info on Tropical Storm Emily.
