Winter Bliss

September 13th, 2012 by Samantha Rupert

Winter is South Africa is not much of a winter at all, at least not by New York standards. It doesn’t snow and the coldest average temperature in Cape Town in the winter is 7 degrees Celcius (about 44 degrees Farenheit) and 11 degrees Celcius (51 degrees Farenheit) in Durban. To us, that’s “praise the lord” warm. However, winter in South Africa also means long, fast barrels and clean ramps. Keep an eye on the barrel around the 1:40 mark as the surfer squeezes out of it. Enjoy some “Winter Bliss.” Music: Toro Y Moi- Still SoundMore »

Surfing And Sharks

May 3rd, 2012 by Samantha Rupert

All surfers have some kind of relationship or stigma with sharks. They are the mysteriously fascinating predators that swim beneath your feet when you’re waiting for a set, the creatures that can smell the blood from your reef rash from miles away and the animals that have a reputation for being brutal killers, when they are just misunderstood and horrifically portrayed. If you know anything about sharks, you know South Africa is the hot spot. In June, when the swell starts pumping, the sharks roll in, following the sardines on their migration. Only in South African waters can you see a 2-ton great white shark breach the surface in powerful fashion as it bombards its seal dinner. More »

Billabong Pro J-Bay ON HOLD!!!!

July 22nd, 2011 by John Zanussi

I’m pretty sure everyone, including the pros slotted to surf in round 3 of the Billabong Pro J-Bay were expecting the contest to start up again early this morning in South Africa. Expectations were let down. After not one, or two, or three, or even four, but nine, NINE, calls to put the contest on hold, they officially called yet another lay day at 3:15pm. More »
