The Week We Lost Andy Irons

November 2nd, 2011 by John Zanussi

A year ago today the world lost not only a 3 time world champion but one of the most fearless and influential surfers of all time. It all came at a time when Andy was bouncing back and quickly making a comeback to the World Tour. With a win at the 2010 Billabong Pro Teahupoo in early September, Andy sat in 16th place on the rankings leading up to the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico. He was surfing like the Andy we all knew and loved and had some momentum. I had flown down to Puerto Rico a few days before Halloween and was more than ecstatic to see the worlds best surfers battle it out at Middles in Isabella. I could have never imagined the ups and downs of the days to follow. More »

5 Days in Puerto Rico

April 12th, 2011 by John Zanussi

Puerto Rico has become a second home for me over the past couple years. My family has a house down in Rincon so it makes it easy for me to make the trip whenever I have the free time. I spent 5 days down there last week and although I didn’t surf as much as I usually would because of the lack of waves, I still had a ton of fun. Here are a handful of photos I took with both my iPhone and Canon DSLR that capture some of my favorite places and things in Puerto Rico. More »

Kelly Slater High Fives Jordy Smith at the Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico

March 7th, 2011 by John Zanussi

I was going through the thousands of photos I took, while down in Puerto Rico, at the Rip Curl Pro Search last November, and came across the one above. As soon as I saw it, the feeling of déjà vu came over me and I was reminded of the level of excitement that was on the beach that day. More »

Gas Chambers

December 8th, 2010 by John Zanussi

Every single time I’m down in Puerto Rico I’m either a few days late or leaving a few days to early to catch a swell big enough for Gas Chambers to start working. It happened again this year. A few days after I left PR following the Rip Curl Pro Search, the island was blessed with a swell and Gas Chambers went off. More »
