Quiksilver Pro New York Lay Day Photos

September 5th, 2011 by John Zanussi

Day one of the Quiksilver Pro New York is in the books. Although a lay day was the call for today there was plenty of action that went down at the event site here in Long Beach. The opening ceremonies took place at 11am with Peter Mel introducing a handful of the pros, followed by a prayer and some live music from Quiksilver’s Hawaiian ambassadors Mel Pu’u and Titus Kinimaka. Afterwards, the day was filled with a few expression session heats followed by a tow-at session. More »

We’ve been seeing a ton of video and photos from the waves and destruction that Hurricane Irene caused. The only problem is that not a lot of it is from New York. Well, this video shows how big and epic it got out in Montauk last week. More »

Quiksilver Pro New York Trials Wrap-Up and Round 1 Heat Matchups

September 4th, 2011 by John Zanussi

After this morning’s trials, which were held in some rather crappy conditions here in Long Beach, we have the final list of surfers that will be competing in the Quiksilver Pro New York. Floridian, Asher Nolan was the big winner as he advanced over 15 other surfers in the trials, granting him a spot in the main event. There were a few guys I was pulling for to win the trials including late entry Aaron Cormican, trials for the trials winner Leif Engstrom, and not only the runner-up this morning but the guy I think surfed the best out there, Keanu Asing. It’s a bummer to see those guys loose but I’m stoked for Asher as this is his first crack at a World Tour event. Although he isn’t going up against Kelly Slater in his first heat as New York’s Balaram Stack is, Asher still has to face Mick Fanning and Heitor Alves in his round one heat. More »

Quiksilver Pro New York Pre-Event Photos

September 3rd, 2011 by John Zanussi

The wait for the world’s largest surf contest is almost over. Tomorrow is the trials and the day after is the first day of an 11 day waiting period for the Quiksilver Pro New York. Long Beach is already buzzing and luckily for me, I found a place to stay for the next two weeks a block away from the beach and a few blocks from the event site. After “moving in” this morning, I walked down to National Blvd and snapped the following photos of the pre-event happenings. More »

Tomorrow at 8am will be the first call for the Trials for the Quiksilver Pro New York. Below is the list of surfers you’ll see in the water tomorrow battling it out for the last spot in the main event. More »

City of Long Beach Canceling the Quiksilver Pro New York? (Updated)

August 29th, 2011 by John Zanussi

The internet is currently blowing up with rumblings that the City of Long Beach is trying to pull the plug on the Quiksilver Pro New York. This past weekend most of the East Coast got smacked up by Hurricane Irene and a lot of damage took place where the competition and festival for the Quiksilver Pro New York is supposed to take place. However, early this morning, Quiksilver sent out an email and posted on their site that the event will go on as planned. Then, at 5pm today, Long Beach Patch posted a story that the City of Long Beach has canceled all the festival events (concerts and bmx, skate and motocross demos) but the surf contest would still go on. Now, at 10pm, waves of rumors are making their way across facebook and twitter that the entire event has been canceled. More »
