Island Surfboards // Local Shaper Legacy

April 3rd, 2013 by Samantha Rupert

The south shore of Long Island is rich in surfing history. As a sport, and more importantly, a lifestyle, surfing has been gaining popularity since the mid-1960s. Over the years, many local surfing families developed reputations for quality surfboard shaping. Their shaping legacies were handed down from generation to generation. But Tommy Grimes, the 22-year-old founder of Island Surfboards in Massapequa, has a more unconventional story. He didn’t inherit a shaping legacy, he’s building his own. More »

Cold Water Surfer Series // Winter Through The Lens

March 26th, 2013 by Samantha Rupert

New York winters are brutal. The teeth-chattering wind howls through the trees and angry waves crash upon the snowy shores. For the winter warriors of the Long Island surf community, that means just one thing: empty slabs for the taking. More »

Perfect New York Winter Day

March 12th, 2013 by John Zanussi

After lots of blistering cold days and a couple big snowstorms this past weekend warmed up and gave New York it’s first real glimpse of spring. With the warmth also came the most fun few days of surf in I can remember. Too bad the water temp was still in the 30′s. More »

Urban Promulgation

October 3rd, 2012 by Samantha Rupert

Promulgation means to make known by an open declaration. And that’s just what this featurette does. Filmed and edited by New Jersey- based photographer Ryan Struck, Urban Promulgation highlights New York surfing by exploiting the surf talents of Michael Powell, PJ Raia and Ben Powell. The New York surf culture is often mocked or overlooked, but in the 2-minute film, Struck gives the public another reason to recognize it. Feast your eyes on some stealthy New York-style shredding. Hurricane Leslie Photo Dump

September 13th, 2012 by John Zanussi

September in New York is, was, and forever will be my favorite month of the year. Warm water, amazing weather, and usually great waves. Last year Hurricane Katia provided the East Coast, and more importantly, the Quiksilver Pro New York, with a ton of great waves. This year’s wave maker was Hurricane Leslie and she did a fantastic job at delivering the goods. Leslie sent swell from Puerto Rico to the Canadian Maritimes and everywhere in between. Lucky for us here in New York we had a week or so worth of waves with a few days of offshore winds making for some great conditions. Picking and choosing my days to not go into work I was able to score a handful of good sessions and take some photos. More »
