Hurricane Irene Lights Up The Northeast

September 1st, 2011 by John Zanussi

Hurricane Irene started out as a broad tropical wave off the west coast of Africa and matured into one of the most damaging storm to wreak havoc on the East Coast in many years. Hurricane Irene caused power outages for over 1 million people, knocked down trees and power lines, flooded rivers, and caused 40 plus deaths from North Carolina all the way up to Maine. However, it wasn’t just damage and devastation that Irene caused, she also sent a ton of waves to the area. The photos we have below are mostly from New Jersey but it gives you a good glimpse into how good it can on the Right Coast when the tropics heat up in late summer. More »

On Friday, July 22nd, surfers from up and down the New Jersey coast gathered at Tuckerton Seaport to gorge on all of the above at Black Sails Publications and Intercourse Brewery’s Singlefins, Boardwalks, & Storytalks II. A moderately sized Southeast swell arrived and with the mostly West winds, the Jersey Shore was once again the call. Luckily for us, photographer Griffin Lotz was out most of the day capturing the fun that was had and shared the photos with us. More »

April Showers Brings…WAVES!

April 19th, 2011 by John Zanussi

Chilly days of heavy winds, thunderstorms, and torrential downpours followed by a day of sunny skies and 60 degree air temps means it’s officially spring time in the Northeast. With all that squally weather usually comes some excellent waves and depending on what the wind does after the weather moves away determines where it will be going off. In the case of this past Sunday the winds were West, which to me (and most other surfers in the area) means getting in your car and driving to New Jersey where it will be offshore and most likely firing. The famous saying is that April showers bring May flowers but in our case on the East Coast it also means that April Showers brings waves! More »
