Parko Flips Kelly the Bird

March 14th, 2013 by John Zanussi

By now everyone has seen either the highlights or the photo (below) of Joel Parkinson flipping a mid-barrel bird to Kelly Slater who, using priority, is about to drop-in on Parko and prevent him from getting the high score he needed. Surfing Life caught up with both surfers right after the final heat and got their thoughts of what went down. All in all both surfers took it in stride and had a laugh about it. That’s exactly the kind of sportsmanship I love to see. More »

Kelly Slater Wins 2013 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast

March 13th, 2013 by Samantha Rupert

If you happened to miss finals day at the 2013 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, you should be kicking yourself. Following a series of uneventful lay days at Snapper Rocks, the contest moved down to Kirra for its abundant, near-perfect, spitting barrels and a series of finals that kept everyone on the edge of their seat. It was in Kirra’s classically hollow tubes that Kelly Slater ousted Joel Parkinson and snatched the first victory of the season. More »

The 2013 ASP World Tour Preview

March 4th, 2013 by Samantha Rupert

Last year proved to be an insane time for surfing. It was the first time Joel Parkinson ever won a world title, beating out 11x World Champion super-athlete Kelly Slater. On the women’s side, Carissa Moore fell off the grid and Stephanie Gilmore took advantage of the absence by winning her fifth world title. The 2012 tour marked a shift in the surf industry. The world inhaled as the ASP announced it would be selling media rights for the 2014 tour. In November, Nike announced that it would be transferring its surfers to Hurley, and in an inevitable tragedy, Billabong also declared bankruptcy. But 2012 is done and this year’s tour is going to be a wild ride. Take a look at some of the factors that could make the 2013 ASP World Tour one for the books. More »

Kelly Slater And Angus Stone Collaborate On “Here And Now” Soundtrack

January 10th, 2013 by Samantha Rupert

If Kelly Slater decides to forego a 12th world title in 2013, he might have a promising music career–that is when he’s not busy with his wave pool project. I always imagined Kelly strumming along with a little ukelele watching the sets roll in, but I was unaware of his advanced music talents. Kelly teamed up with Australian folk singer, and fellow surfer, Angus Stone to lay tracks for Taylor Steele’s “Here And Now.” More »
