2011 Billabong Pipeline Masters Preview & Heat Matchups

Today is kicks off the first day of the 12 day waiting period for the Billabong Pipeline Masters in Memory of Andy Irons. The Pipe Masters, which is the last stop on the 2011 ASP World Tour is also the last event of the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing. One of my favorite movies, all 46 minutes of it, is now free to watch online whenever you want. Fair Bits features guys like  Taj, Rob Machado, Kelly Slater surfing on all sorts of things all over the world and was made by a collaboration of seven different filmmakers, including Brendan & Emmett Malloy, Clark Eddy, Brendan Hearne, Taylor Steele, Scott Soens, and Kieth Malloy. Every year the webcasts of the World Tour contests seem to get a little better. Whether it’s higher quality feeds, quicker replays, heats on demand, or just overall better coverage of the events, it has definitely come a long way from a few years ago. With the companies looking for new ways to get people watching the contests it’s not uncommon for them to try out new technologies. We saw it earlier in the year at the Quiksilver Pro Bells Beach when the pros had the option to wear a small GPS chip in their jerseys that tracked their every movement and speed in real-time. This time around in Tahiti, is introducing the Heat Analyzer. More »

Billabong Pro Tahiti Round One Heat Match Ups

Stop number five on the 2011 ASP World Tour is Tahiti and with a decent swell in the forecast, the Billabong Pro should begin on the first day of the waiting period this weekend. The local trials finished up yesterday which means the round one heat draw is set. Surprisingly missing from the list, yet again, is Mr. Dane Reynolds. Dane might be out, but two guys who missed the last comp are back, including “I’d rather surf perfect Cloudbreak instead of compete at J-Bay” Kelly Slater and “I LIKE TO VENT MY FEELINGS ON TWITTER IN ALL CAPS” Bobby Martinez. Billabong Pro J-Bay Results and Recap

For the second year in a row, Jordy Smith has won the Billabong Pro J-Bay. Having a bit of a hometown advantage the South African really showed his abilities in the later rounds of the competition. The final against Mick Fanning was a real close one, but Jordy came out on top beating Mick by only 0.77 points.
