Just in case you didn’t see it here is Kelly Slater launching a massive air in the final moments of his semi-final heat against Taj Burrow. This wave netter Kelly a perfect 10 and when you combine that with his previous wave of a 9.07 it was enough to beat Taj and move to the finals. More »

The swell was definitely bigger on Wednesday morning (6 to 8-foot) but the wind was kinda sideshore and the waves were a little sloppy. In the first heat, Mick Fanning rallied after yesterday’s defeat and knocked out local favorite Balaram Stack with a 15.20. More »

Quiksilver Pro New York Trials Wrap-Up and Round 1 Heat Matchups

September 4th, 2011 by John Zanussi

After this morning’s trials, which were held in some rather crappy conditions here in Long Beach, we have the final list of surfers that will be competing in the Quiksilver Pro New York. Floridian, Asher Nolan was the big winner as he advanced over 15 other surfers in the trials, granting him a spot in the main event. There were a few guys I was pulling for to win the trials including late entry Aaron Cormican, trials for the trials winner Leif Engstrom, and not only the runner-up this morning but the guy I think surfed the best out there, Keanu Asing. It’s a bummer to see those guys loose but I’m stoked for Asher as this is his first crack at a World Tour event. Although he isn’t going up against Kelly Slater in his first heat as New York’s Balaram Stack is, Asher still has to face Mick Fanning and Heitor Alves in his round one heat. More »

Billabong Pro Tahiti Round One Heat Match Ups

August 16th, 2011 by John Zanussi

Stop number five on the 2011 ASP World Tour is Tahiti and with a decent swell in the forecast, the Billabong Pro should begin on the first day of the waiting period this weekend. The local trials finished up yesterday which means the round one heat draw is set. Surprisingly missing from the list, yet again, is Mr. Dane Reynolds. Dane might be out, but two guys who missed the last comp are back, including “I’d rather surf perfect Cloudbreak instead of compete at J-Bay” Kelly Slater and “I LIKE TO VENT MY FEELINGS ON TWITTER IN ALL CAPS” Bobby Martinez. More on the contest below. More »

Balaram Stack Gets Wildcard for Quiksilver Pro New York

July 27th, 2011 by John Zanussi

In a press release I recieved this morning, Quiksilver has made it official that the first of two wildcard spots for the Quiksilver Pro New York will be New York’s own Balaram Stack. While this is what most of us expected, I’m pumped to see it be official and that Bal will have a chance to compete with the world’s best surfers in his backyard. The second wildcard spot will be determined between 16 surfers during the Quiksilver Pro New York ASP World Tour Trials. We’ve got the lineup for that below. More »

Billabong Pro J-Bay Results and Recap

July 26th, 2011 by John Zanussi

For the second year in a row, Jordy Smith has won the Billabong Pro J-Bay. Having a bit of a hometown advantage the South African really showed his abilities in the later rounds of the competition. The final against Mick Fanning was a real close one, but Jordy came out on top beating Mick by only 0.77 points. We’ve got the rundown on the later rounds of the competition, along with photos, videos, and the new world rankings below. More »

Billabong Pro J-Bay Update

July 21st, 2011 by John Zanussi

Eight days of the eleven day waiting period have gone by and two rounds of competition have gone down at the 2011 Billabong Pro J-Bay. With more swell on the way, round 3 will likely kick off early tomorrow morning at Jeffrey’s Bay. It’s been hard to watch the webcast live here in the U.S. because of the time difference between here and South Africa, so if you’re like me and missed most of the live action we’ve got video highlights, photos, and a quick recap of the first two rounds below.
