Hurricane Leslie Photo Dump
September in New York is, was, and forever will be my favorite month of the year. Warm water, amazing weather, and usually great waves. Last year Hurricane Katia provided the East Coast, and more importantly, the Quiksilver Pro New York, with a ton of great waves. This year’s wave maker was Hurricane Leslie and she did a fantastic job at delivering the goods. Leslie sent swell from Puerto Rico to the Canadian Maritimes and everywhere in between. Lucky for us here in New York we had a week or so worth of waves with a few days of offshore winds making for some great conditions. Picking and choosing my days to not go into work I was able to score a handful of good sessions and take some photos. More »
Hurricane Irene Lights Up The Northeast
Hurricane Irene started out as a broad tropical wave off the west coast of Africa and matured into one of the most damaging storm to wreak havoc on the East Coast in many years. Hurricane Irene caused power outages for over 1 million people, knocked down trees and power lines, flooded rivers, and caused 40 plus deaths from North Carolina all the way up to Maine. However, it wasn’t just damage and devastation that Irene caused, she also sent a ton of waves to the area. The photos we have below are mostly from New Jersey but it gives you a good glimpse into how good it can on the Right Coast when the tropics heat up in late summer. More »
Hurricane Earl New Jersey
Late last week and last weekend most of the East Coast went off thanks to the swell sent by our bud Hurricane Earl. Conditions on Friday were as good as I think they can possibly get here on Long Island. I spent all day surfing in Long Beach and had some of my by best waves in a long time here at home. New Jersey was no different and Scott Miller aka JerseyShoreTog got a lot of good photos. More »
July Swell Water Shots
New York and most of the Northeast saw a pretty fun run of waves this past weekend. I was in the water all day Saturday and it was one of those perfect summertime surfing days. The crowds were thin, water is warm enough to trunk it, there was a decent size swell in the water and by late day the winds had gone offshore. Long Island summer swell at it’s best. Meanwhile further east on the island, our friend Evan Conway from Red Dawn Productions was out in his backyard enjoying the waves and capturing the waves with his camera. He was nice enough to send over a handful of shots which we have in the gallery. More »
Winter Solstice in Australia
Up here in the Northern Hemisphere we were just given the gift of the official start of summer a few days ago. Down south, way down south, the seasons are opposite and they were just handed the beginning of winter. If you’re in Australia, specifically on the Gold Coast you know that with the cold winter weather there’s also been some excellent waves the past week or so. More »
Northeast Sessions May 19th Photos
Last week saw a fun little blast of swell here on Long Island. Our good friend, Greg over at Northeast Sessions managed to get some killer shots from land and in the water and has put together a gallery showing off the goodness that was last Wednesday. We’ve got a few shots along with a link to the full gallery after the jump. More »
March Madness Comes To An End
March came in like a lion and certainly went out like one. This past month went down as the wettest month on record on Long Island, dropping almost 10 inches of rain in some areas. A couple of nor’easters and a few other low pressure systems brought not only rain and wind to the area, but also some of the best days of waves we’ve seen in a while. It was truly madness. Earlier in the month we saw a huge storm that took down trees and left people without power for days but, damn, we’re the waves pumping. To continue the madness of March, we got slammed by another storm in the closing days of the month, leaving us with a lot of rain and a lot of waves. More »
Last Day of March in New York
March brought a handful of excellent days of waves to the New York area. We had that really bad storm in the beginning of the month and a gnarly storm to end March. Here is what Long Beach looked like on the last day of the month. More »
Lions March In: Nor’easter Slams New York
This past weekend saw one hell of a storm in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. A severe Nor’easter swept up the coast and slammed Long Island all day Saturday and into Sunday dumping inches of rain and producing winds of up to 75mph. I guess we got a little tast of what it would be like if a weak Category 1 Hurricane rolled through the area. Most of Long Island was without power all day Sunday and will be for a few more days. There were down trees, telephone poles, and wires all over causing some neighborhoods to look like a disaster area. The ocean was mean and angry on Saturday with severe storm conditions and early Sunday was much of the same. As the wind turned and went more offshore, it cleaned up a little bit and if you were ballsy enough to paddle out and battle the insane drift, there were some bombs to be had. More »
California Love
Valentine’s weekend in Cali went off with some super back-to-back swells and perfect conditions. There were high pressure systems that came close enough to give Cali plussing swell but also stayed far enough away for warm, clear, sunny skies with light winds. I’m sure there were a lot of upset ladies in Cali that Sunday, but they better know the deal when it comes to surfing. Check out the dope pictures below of a few California locals, including Taylor Knox, Nat Young, and Wardo ripping it up. More »
