Kelly Slater Hasn’t Officially Won 11 Yet

November 4th, 2011 by John Zanussi

Either someone from the ASP isn’t good at math or their computers aren’t working properly because it looks like the newly crowned ASP world champ, Kelly Slater, hasn’t actually won his 11th world title yet. More »

Kelly Slater Wins 11th World Title

November 3rd, 2011 by John Zanussi

Yesterday was a huge day for the surfing world for two reasons: We remembered the loss of one of surfing’s greats of Andy Irons as he passed away a year ago yesterday. And by making it through his round 3 heat at the Rip Curl Pro Search 2011, Kelly Slater took a large enough lead in the points rankings that he was declared the 2011 ASP world champion, making it his 11th time being declared the champ. The Week We Lost Andy Irons

November 2nd, 2011 by John Zanussi

A year ago today the world lost not only a 3 time world champion but one of the most fearless and influential surfers of all time. It all came at a time when Andy was bouncing back and quickly making a comeback to the World Tour. With a win at the 2010 Billabong Pro Teahupoo in early September, Andy sat in 16th place on the rankings leading up to the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico. He was surfing like the Andy we all knew and loved and had some momentum. I had flown down to Puerto Rico a few days before Halloween and was more than ecstatic to see the worlds best surfers battle it out at Middles in Isabella. I could have never imagined the ups and downs of the days to follow. More »

Boys Beware: Carissa Moore Surfs Better Than You (And Looks Better Doing It)

July 18th, 2011 by Samantha Rupert

The ASP crowned a new World Title champion on Friday as Carissa Moore (HAW) battled her way into the final against Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), solidifying her world title win, making her the youngest title champion in ASP history. Ok, so Moore didn’t win the actual contest (I guess now would be the proper time to congratulate Steph Gilmore for that), but who cares? That’s not the story here. Gilmore already has four titles under her belt. More »

Freddy Patacchia Injures His Knee

March 16th, 2011 by John Zanussi

Last week while cruising twitter I noticed a tweet by Freddy P mentioning that he tweaked his knee and that he was planning on going to the doctor. This is pretty unfortunate for the 29 year old Hawaiian as it’s very early in the 2011 season and a knee injury, if serious, can keep him off the tour for a while and ultimately ruin any hopes he had at winning a title this year. Then again it could be something minor and he could be out for a contest and back competing like Dane Reynolds plans on doing after injuring his knee in Hawaii and missing out on the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. March 7th, 2011 by John Zanussi

Back in 2007, Volcom created the Volcom Stone’s $10,000 Kickflip-Off Contest. Even though there were a handful of rules and regulations, it was pretty simple: be the first surfer to successfully land a kickfilp on a wave and get it on video and you’d win $10,000. Cut to 4 years later, to last week and we’ve got ourselves a winner. See the update below. More »
