One of the great big wave chargers of our day is no longer with us. The 35 year old goofy foot from Kauai, Sion Milosky, lost his life while surfing Mavericks yesterday. Milosky is survived by his wife and two kids.

On a day where the waves were as big and as good as it gets at Mavericks, Sion Milosky and some of the other best big wave surfers were out charging all day. The only difference was that Sion was apparently sitting deeper and taking off on more of the bombs then anyone else yesterday.

As reported by Surfline.com:

At approximately 6:00pm today, he took off on a very big wave outside the bowl. “Sion was surfing the place like he owned it, a full inspiration, sitting in a very aggressive spot and catching the ramp into the bowl,” longtime Mav’s charger Ryan Seelbach explained. “On this particular wave, he was right in the heart of the bowl. He made the drop, got to the bottom, did a bottom turn and the thing just mowed him over. There was no making it to the shoulder on that.”

Seelbach was on a ski with filmer Chris Killen on the shoulder when the set hit. Milosky went down on the first wave. “I saw his board tombstoning and jumped off the ski,” explained Seelbach. The set lasted four or five waves, and XXL winner Shawn Dollar went down hard on one, and attention shifted to rescuing him. No one in the lineup knew what had happened to Milosky until Nathan Fletcher made it back out on his ski after changing boards and couldn’t see his friend. Fletcher started looking for Milosky in the lagoon, and eventually found his body near the mouth of the harbor — over a mile away from the lineup. He raced to shore but it was too late.

This is truly sad news and my thoughts go out to the Milosky family. R.I.P.
