Freddy Patacchia Injures His Knee

Last week while cruising twitter I noticed a tweet by Freddy P mentioning that he tweaked his knee and that he was planning on going to the doctor. This is pretty unfortunate for the 29 year old Hawaiian as it’s very early in the 2011 season and a knee injury, if serious, can keep him off the tour for a while and ultimately ruin any hopes he had at winning a title this year. Then again it could be something minor and he could be out for a contest and back competing like Dane Reynolds plans on doing after injuring his knee in Hawaii and missing out on the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.
A story on ESPN.com has some more information on the subject saying that Patacchia hasn’t gone to see a doctor yet because the traffic in Hawaii has been crazy due to a recent swell. In his own opinion, Fred believes he hasn’t done any serious damage and has only torn his meniscus, which apparently isn’t that serious of a knee injury compared to blowing out your ACL or MCL.
It makes me think though, the way the pros are surfing these days with the height and speed they are putting into their maneuvers, will injuries like Freddy’s and Dane’s become more of a common thing? Does taking the progression of surfing to the next level mean more risk and worse injuries?
Hopefully Fred is all right and is able to surf by the time the next contest kicks off next month. Either way, I’ll keep you updated on it.
