The surfing world was shocked today as the news of the death of 3 time World Champion, Andy Irons made it’s way into the media.

According to a few sources, Andy, along with a few other pro surfers on tour, caught some kind of illness in the time during the last event in Portugal and now. In Andy’s case it was Dengue fever. From an article on theaustralian.com, Owen Wright spoke about the sickness going around.

“I almost didn’t turn up for this event myself,” he said from his hotel room in Puerto Rico. “There had been a bout of this going round from Portugal. It didn’t hit me as a surprise that Andy was sick.”

Wright and the others had seen doctors and luckily were not as sick as Andy was. Andy Irons showed up to Puerto Rico thinking he was going to compete in the Rip Curl Pro Search contest but had to withdraw from his Round 1 and 2 heats due to feeling sick. This morning, Andy was en route from Puerto Rico to his home in Hawaii, but was unable to board a plane after a layover in Dallas. He was later found dead in his hotel room.

The official statement from the Irons family is:

The world of surfing mourns an incredibly sad loss today with the news that Hawaii’s Andy Irons has died. Andy was a beloved husband, and a true champion.

Irons, 32, withdrew from a professional surfing event in Puerto Rico last weekend due to illness, and passed away during a layover en-route to his home in Kauai, Hawaii. He had reportedly been battling with Dengue Fever, a viral disease.

At this time the family thanks his friends and fans for their support, and asks that the community respect its privacy. The family also asks to not be contacted so their focus can remain on one another during this time of profound loss.

Irons, who began his career with the elite ASP World Tour in 1998, went on to collect 20 elite tour victories, four Triple Crown of Surfing Titles, three consecutive ASP World Titles and change the sport forever with his unparalleled ability and comprehensive approach to surfing.

This is such tragic news and a truly devastating day for the surfing world.

Our deepest thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to the entire Irons family, especially his wife Lyndie, who is expecting their first child in a few weeks.

Andy Irons will be missed by all, worldwide. He was an amazing surfer and a great human being.
