Way of the Ocean

February 22nd, 2010 by John Zanussi

So far, Way of the Ocean, is my favorite surf movie of 2010. On their website, they describe it as a “documentary of epic proportions” and I can already see why. The film follows top guys like Slater, Dane, Josh Kerr, CJ, and Asher Pacey around the globe as they surf the top spots. From watching some trailers and pre released videos, I can tell that this movie is less about the huge airs and more about the flow of riding waves. Way of the Ocean is going to be released as a 5 part DVD series starting with “Way of the Ocean: Australia”. There are no official release dates yet but we will be keeping you updated on this one. The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D Movie Featuring Kelly Slater

February 17th, 2010 by John Zanussi

The first 3D IMAX surf movie made its premiere last week in LA. The Ultimate Wave Tahiti features nine-time world champ, Kelly Slater surfing the best waves Tahiti has to offer. The film is only 45 minutes long but there is some insane footage of Slater surfing along with free dives through schools of tropical fish, and scenic tours of Tahiti’s coral reef and volcanic island formations. Slater and some friends meet up with Tahitian surfer, Raimana Van Bastolaer and experience the exotic culture Tahiti has to offer before heading out to score perfect waves. The 3D version puts you right on the shoulder of Teahupo’o as it spits a salty blast of water right into your face. Watch the trailer here and make sure you go see this movie in theatres. For a complete list of theaters showing the movie and the premiere dates, click here. More »

Chris Malloy’s New Movie: 180º South

February 12th, 2010 by John Zanussi

Chris Malloy is at it again with another awesome looking film called 180º South. Like his other movies, Thicker Than Water and A Brokedown Melody, this one is less like the typical surf movie. It’s more about the adventure and experience of traveling to far away locations and meeting new interesting people than it is about the surfing. Inspired by the 1968 film and story Mountain of Storm, Jeff Johnson and a crew of friends make the insane 6 month trip, over 10,000 miles, from Ventura, California all the way south to the southern most end of South America, Patagonia. Along the way Jeff gets shipwrecked off Easter Island, surfs the longest wave of his life and ascends the 2400 foot Corcovado Mountain in Brazil. Although the surfing parts aren’t out of this world good, the film looks really awesome and inspiring. There is no word of an official release date but you can check out the official website for more info. You can also watch the trailer here on SURFBANG. More »

February 9th, 2010 by John Zanussi

In a move to push their new Cypher line of board shorts and wetsuits, Quiksilver has teamed up with Surfline and are giving away a free download of their new short film. This vid was shot at 1000, yeah that’s right, 1000 frames a second with a camera that has never been used to shoot surfing before. The high def super slo-mo parts are absolutely ridiculous and you can download the whole movie for FREE.  More »
