“A Hundred Miles to The End” – A Long Island Surf Film

I had the privilege of interviewing John Beattie, the man behind the surf film “A Hundred Miles to The End,” which premiered last Saturday night at Long Beach Public Library. This past winter, John gave me a sneak preview of a rough cut of his film and I was pleasantly surprised by the overall emotional connection I felt as I watched the footage. I grew up surfing Gilgo Beach in the early ’70s and spent a good part of my summers cruising to Montauk to surf the uncrowded breaks, that today (some 40 plus years later), I consider my home break. Though I’m a lifelong surfer, I knew there was something more to this film than just raw surf footage. More »

SMASH FEST 1 Schedule

This four-day event will span the NY area, from NYC to Rockaway, to Long Beach, and Montauk. The Film Festival is a  profit-sharing surf film festival for independent filmmakers.  Profits from screenings will be shared with each filmmaker, allowing  an opportunity for directors and producers to help recoup the costs for their hard work on each film. “A Hundred Miles to the End” Premiere Hosted by SMASH

SMASH Productions LLC is stoked to announce that SMASH FEST 1 will play host to the world premiere of the New York surfing epic, ‘A Hundred Miles to the End,’ a film directed and produced by John Beattie. The premiere will take place on Saturday, July 13th at 7PM at the Long Beach Public Library in Long Beach, NY. After suffering a debilitating stroke in 2007, John Beattie made a strong recovery but was left unable to continue his lifelong love of surfing. Through film, John has been able to reconnect with his passion. ‘A Hundred Miles to the End’ follows John from Long Beach to Montauk as he rediscovers surfing, as it exists today, in the different surfing communities throughout Long Island, NY. Surfers are amazing creatures. No matter what life throws their way, surfers are characteristically unfazed by setbacks and they never give up. Long Island native John Beattie was a lifelong surfer up until 2007 when he suffered a stroke. Due to residual weakness in his arms and legs, Beattie had to retire his surfboard. Instead, he picked up his camera and began to document his irrevocable love for surfing. More »

Joel Parkinson // ASP World Title Journey

Last year Joel Parkinson won his first ever ASP World Title. After finishing in the runner-up slot so many times in the past it looked like it could happen again as Kelly Slater was closing in on Parko at the last event of the year. This 25 minute documentary takes a look at the ups and downs of all the events that took place leading up to Parko securing the title and winning the 2012 Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons. New York Surf Film Festival Outlines 2012 Official Program
