2010 shark attack report 610x406 2010 Shark Attacks

Last week, the University of Florida released it’s annual International Shark Attack File and it has some interesting findings in it for 2010. Being a surfer and spending a ton of time in the open ocean, you might want to continue reading.

Across the globe in 2010, there were 79 recorded shark attacks. This was the highest number of attacks since 2000, when there were 80 shark attacks. Within those 79 attacks, there were 6 deaths in 2010. The number of attacks might be up from recent years but 79 attacks worldwide in an entire year really isn’t that many. Your chances of getting attacked are pretty slim.

The United States held the record for most attacks around the world with 36. The breakdown by state is below.

Florida: 13
North Carolina: 5
California: 4
Hawaii: 4
South Carolina: 4
Georgia: 1
Maine: 1
Oregon: 1
Texas: 1
Virginia: 1
Washington: 1

Here’s the breakdown for other countries around the world with a reported attack in 2010:

Australia: 14
South Africa: 8
Vietnam: 6
Egypt: 6

It’s no surprise really to see Florida at the top of the list in the U.S. and I’m very glad New York didn’t have any incidents. Kind of interesting to see that Egypt of all places had 6 attacks.
