Every year the webcasts of the World Tour contests seem to get a little better. Whether it’s higher quality feeds, quicker replays, heats on demand, or just overall better coverage of the events, it has definitely come a long way from a few years ago. With the companies looking for new ways to get people watching the contests it’s not uncommon for them to try out new technologies. We saw it earlier in the year at the Quiksilver Pro Bells Beach when the pros had the option to wear a small GPS chip in their jerseys that tracked their every movement and speed in real-time. This time around in Tahiti, is introducing the Heat Analyzer. More
On August 17th, 1984 a non-profit foundation that helps protects the oceans and beaches around the world was created. Glenn Henning and two of his friends set out to save one of their favorite waves in Malibu, California and with their success, the Surfrider Foundation was born. In the 27 years of existence, Surfrider has grown to be a recognized name all of the world with about 80 chapters in over 15 countries. More
After the success of Modern Collective, Kai Neville is back at it again with his latest surf flick, Lost Atlas. The movie features a handful of super talented surfers surfing locations all over the globe. More
Stop number five on the 2011 ASP World Tour is Tahiti and with a decent swell in the forecast, the Billabong Pro should begin on the first day of the waiting period this weekend. The local trials finished up yesterday which means the round one heat draw is set. Surprisingly missing from the list, yet again, is Mr. Dane Reynolds. Dane might be out, but two guys who missed the last comp are back, including “I’d rather surf perfect Cloudbreak instead of compete at J-Bay” Kelly Slater and “I LIKE TO VENT MY FEELINGS ON TWITTER IN ALL CAPS” Bobby Martinez. More on the contest below. More
It all started at the end of last month when the Quiksilver announced the surfers that would be competing in the trials for the Quiksilver Pro New York. Mixed in with a handful of international surfers were a couple of East Coast guys including, but not limited to, New Jersey and New York poster surfers Sam Hammer and Balaram Stack, respectively. Also from New York was the Trials for the Trials winner, Leif Engstrom. A few Floridians were on the list too, but to my surprise, there was one guy missing from the list who definitely deserved a spot and that was Aaron Cormican. Now, through the weird powers of social media and help from the 10x world champ, Gorkin has a spot in the trials. We caught up with him and asked him a little about how it all happened. More
Three weeks from tomorrow is the start of the massive event that is the Quiksilver Pro New York. A two week long event consisting of concerts (with a rad lineup of bands), bmx and skate demos, crazy parties and a surf contest with the largest prize purse ever featuring the world’s best surfers.
All this craziness will be taking place in Long Beach and as you can see in the event map above, the setup is going to be insane. More
If there’s one tool I use and depend on the most to check how the waves are, it’s NDBC buoy station 44025. The National Data Buoy Center has over 1000 buoys in the open waters across the globe and the one that has become a dear friend of mine and a permanent bookmark on my computer since as long as I can remember stopped sending data and hasn’t been heard from in over a week. I’ve been tracking Emily since before she had a name and she was just a little tropical wave off the coast of Africa. As a surfer on the east coast, it’s the time of the year where I really start to pay attention to the tropics. I waited to put a post up about Emily until now because I didn’t want to jinx our chance of getting waves and even now I’m still a little worried. Emily is currently weakening as she makes her way over Hispaniola but she’s got the potential to send us some decent swell. More
