There was a lot of impressive surfing in Thursday’s EIGHT hours of competition, but there are four things that you really need to know about Day 3 of the Quikky Pro (just in case your water cooler convo is like mine):
1. Parko loves New York.
2. Josh Kerr and Kelly love New York.
3. Commentators love New York.
4. Mick Fanning hates New York. More
The swell was definitely bigger on Wednesday morning (6 to 8-foot) but the wind was kinda sideshore and the waves were a little sloppy. In the first heat, Mick Fanning rallied after yesterday’s defeat and knocked out local favorite Balaram Stack with a 15.20. More
Let’s see here… today’s headlines…
- Dane’s Ribs Hurt So Bad He Couldn’t Notify Anyone That He Was Bowing Out Until Lunchtime
- Balaram Stack Made A Bigger Splash Than Kelly (With The Crowd)
- Rookie Brazilian Alejo Muniz SHREDS
- Wilko Slid From First To Third (In Heat 10) After “Interfering”
- Kerrzy Is Kerrazy. And Julian Wilson, Too.
Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Read on for the the deets. More
Day one of the Quiksilver Pro New York is in the books. Although a lay day was the call for today there was plenty of action that went down at the event site here in Long Beach. The opening ceremonies took place at 11am with Peter Mel introducing a handful of the pros, followed by a prayer and some live music from Quiksilver’s Hawaiian ambassadors Mel Pu’u and Titus Kinimaka. Afterwards, the day was filled with a few expression session heats followed by a tow-at session. More
After this morning’s trials, which were held in some rather crappy conditions here in Long Beach, we have the final list of surfers that will be competing in the Quiksilver Pro New York. Floridian, Asher Nolan was the big winner as he advanced over 15 other surfers in the trials, granting him a spot in the main event. There were a few guys I was pulling for to win the trials including late entry Aaron Cormican, trials for the trials winner Leif Engstrom, and not only the runner-up this morning but the guy I think surfed the best out there, Keanu Asing. It’s a bummer to see those guys loose but I’m stoked for Asher as this is his first crack at a World Tour event. Although he isn’t going up against Kelly Slater in his first heat as New York’s Balaram Stack is, Asher still has to face Mick Fanning and Heitor Alves in his round one heat. More
Tomorrow at 8am will be the first call for the Trials for the Quiksilver Pro New York. We had the lineup of trialists back in July when Quik announced that Balaram Stack would get a wildcard spot but, with Aaron Cormican getting a late spot in the trials, things have changed a little. Below is the list of surfers you’ll see in the water tomorrow battling it out for the last spot in the main event. More
The guys over at Anarchy Eyewear were nice enough to send me some of their newest sunglasses to review. Anarchy is an East Coast company and they have sent me shades a few times before to check out, review, and giveaway to all of you. For the last couple weeks I’ve been wearing a pair of sunglasses from the new Color Hits Series and I’ve got a full review and some photos for your viewing pleasure. More
Hurricane Irene started out as a broad tropical wave off the west coast of Africa and matured into one of the most damaging storm to wreak havoc on the East Coast in many years. Hurricane Irene caused power outages for over 1 million people, knocked down trees and power lines, flooded rivers, and caused 40 plus deaths from North Carolina all the way up to Maine. However, it wasn’t just damage and devastation that Irene caused, she also sent a ton of waves to the area. The photos we have below are mostly from New Jersey but it gives you a good glimpse into how good it can on the Right Coast when the tropics heat up in late summer. More
The internet is currently blowing up with rumblings that the City of Long Beach is trying to pull the plug on the Quiksilver Pro New York. This past weekend most of the East Coast got smacked up by Hurricane Irene and a lot of damage took place where the competition and festival for the Quiksilver Pro New York is supposed to take place. However, early this morning, Quiksilver sent out an email and posted on their site that the event will go on as planned. Then, at 5pm today, Long Beach Patch posted a story that the City of Long Beach has canceled all the festival events (concerts and bmx, skate and motocross demos) but the surf contest would still go on. Now, at 10pm, waves of rumors are making their way across facebook and twitter that the entire event has been canceled. More
