SMASH FEST 1 Schedule

This four-day event will span the NY area, from NYC to Rockaway, to Long Beach, and Montauk. The Film Festival is a  profit-sharing surf film festival for independent filmmakers.  Profits from screenings will be shared with each filmmaker, allowing  an opportunity for directors and producers to help recoup the costs for their hard work on each film. “A Hundred Miles to the End” Premiere Hosted by SMASH

SMASH Productions LLC is stoked to announce that SMASH FEST 1 will play host to the world premiere of the New York surfing epic, ‘A Hundred Miles to the End,’ a film directed and produced by John Beattie. The premiere will take place on Saturday, July 13th at 7PM at the Long Beach Public Library in Long Beach, NY. After suffering a debilitating stroke in 2007, John Beattie made a strong recovery but was left unable to continue his lifelong love of surfing. Through film, John has been able to reconnect with his passion. ‘A Hundred Miles to the End’ follows John from Long Beach to Montauk as he rediscovers surfing, as it exists today, in the different surfing communities throughout Long Island, NY. Summer on the South Shore of Oahu

A trolley painted to look like a whale is packed with Japanese tourists as they extend their arms out of the side toward the ocean holding cameras.  A family wearing matching Aloha shirts j-walks in front of the bus- the screeching sound of worn out brakes and the smell of burnt rubber, but everyone unscathed.  A few cute girls in skimpy bikinis sip on tropical drinks with umbrellas in them, disinterested in the near fatal collision.  Everyone’s attention is toward the ocean, where there is solid double overhead surf avalanching throughout a string of picture-perfect peaks as far as the eye can see. It’s summer on the South Shore of Oahu. More »

Surfers are amazing creatures. No matter what life throws their way, surfers are characteristically unfazed by setbacks and they never give up. Long Island native John Beattie was a lifelong surfer up until 2007 when he suffered a stroke. Due to residual weakness in his arms and legs, Beattie had to retire his surfboard. Instead, he picked up his camera and began to document his irrevocable love for surfing. More »
