“A Hundred Miles to The End” – A Long Island Surf Film

July 23rd, 2013 by Tom LaGrassa

I had the privilege of interviewing John Beattie, the man behind the surf film “A Hundred Miles to The End,” which premiered last Saturday night at Long Beach Public Library. This past winter, John gave me a sneak preview of a rough cut of his film and I was pleasantly surprised by the overall emotional connection I felt as I watched the footage. I grew up surfing Gilgo Beach in the early ’70s and spent a good part of my summers cruising to Montauk to surf the uncrowded breaks, that today (some 40 plus years later), I consider my home break. Though I’m a lifelong surfer, I knew there was something more to this film than just raw surf footage. More »

“A Hundred Miles to the End” Premiere Hosted by SMASH

June 25th, 2013 by John Zanussi

SMASH Productions LLC is stoked to announce that SMASH FEST 1 will play host to the world premiere of the New York surfing epic, ‘A Hundred Miles to the End,’ a film directed and produced by John Beattie. The premiere will take place on Saturday, July 13th at 7PM at the Long Beach Public Library in Long Beach, NY. After suffering a debilitating stroke in 2007, John Beattie made a strong recovery but was left unable to continue his lifelong love of surfing. Through film, John has been able to reconnect with his passion. ‘A Hundred Miles to the End’ follows John from Long Beach to Montauk as he rediscovers surfing, as it exists today, in the different surfing communities throughout Long Island, NY. Slater in Bali

June 17th, 2013 by John Zanussi

This video is a year old but considering the waiting period for the Oakley Pro Bali starts today and Kelly Slater’s victory at the Volcom Fiji Pro a few days ago, I think it’s pretty topical. Also, if you haven’t realized already, Slates is a freak. Enjoy. More »

Summer on the South Shore of Oahu

June 1st, 2013 by Phil LeRoy

A trolley painted to look like a whale is packed with Japanese tourists as they extend their arms out of the side toward the ocean holding cameras.  A family wearing matching Aloha shirts j-walks in front of the bus- the screeching sound of worn out brakes and the smell of burnt rubber, but everyone unscathed.  A few cute girls in skimpy bikinis sip on tropical drinks with umbrellas in them, disinterested in the near fatal collision.  Everyone’s attention is toward the ocean, where there is solid double overhead surf avalanching throughout a string of picture-perfect peaks as far as the eye can see. It’s summer on the South Shore of Oahu. More »
