Before you all go crazy, Real Surf is not exactly a surfing competition. Instead, it’s more about the art that goes into creating highly sharable, and infinitely watchable, surf videos. The X Games “Real Series” are video competitions for action sports. After the astonishing success of the Real Snow and Real Skate versions, surfing was added to the mix.
X Games picked eight of the worlds best, and most inventive surfers, to challenge each other in this video editing battle with the first round beginning on April 2. Each round is determined by voters, meaning, all of you. Kelly Slater, Julian Wilson, Gabriel Medina, Matt Meola, Chippa Wilson, Jordy Smith, Dion Agius and Josh Kerr are all competing for the X Games Gold Medal and a check for $10,000.
With a lineup stacked with innovative surfers all experienced in making viral surf videos, it looks like it’s anyones game. However, after the hype from Matt Meola’s Innersection video and the clip of him paddling into Jaws, I’d say he’s a favorite. Chippa Wilson and Dion Agius, while not on the WTC, have made a career out of surfing in movies and videos like the instantly popular “Dear Suburbia.”
But if one thing’s for certain, Kelly Slater will be giving everyone a run for their money. Arguably the best surfer in the world, Slater is sure to put together some sort of ground-breaking video. I’m definitely excited to see what he can do, especially since his focus seems to be drifting away from competing on the World Tour. Hopefully this contest will fuel his competitive artistic side.
The winner, dubbed the “Fan Favorite,” will be announced live during the X Games from April 18-21.
