Rip Curl Omega Wetsuit

March 13th, 2012 by John Zanussi

Times were a whole lot different back in the mid 80’s but it seems some of the fashion trends from back then are starting to make a comeback. To celebrate Tom Curren’s 30th anniversary with Rip Curl they are re-releasing the wetsuit Curren wore during his back to back world championships in 1985 and 1986. The Omega, which used to be Rip Curl’s signature wetsuit is getting a huge update in way of wetsuit technology but still looks exactly the same as it did in the 80’s. More »

Slip Wetsuits On Swiftly With “The Slippy”

March 1st, 2012 by Samantha Rupert

It’s March. It’s still cold. The water is teetering on a limb-numbing 44 degrees. And while waves generally shift up the coast this time of year, this winter brought us only a few worthwhile swells. What’s even more discouraging is the need for wetsuits. The mere thought of pulling on that thick layer of neoprene, “super-stretch” or not, still annoys me. It clips minutes off my time in the water. The last thing I want to do is waste time fighting with my wetsuit before I plunge into the icy water. More »

Kelly Slater’s Pipeline Quiver

December 9th, 2011 by John Zanussi

Rounds one and two of the Billabong Pipe Masters are completed and round 3 hits the water today. If the conditions are anything like yesterday’s double to triple overhead waves we’ll probably see most guys riding boards well over 6 feet long again. Not Kelly Slater though. Yesterday during the webcast, Slates mentioned that he’d probably be out there riding a 5’11”. The guy is a nut. More so, the 11 time world champ only has one board over 6 foot in his quiver for Pipe. Take a look at the boards he’ll be choosing from before his round 3 heat starts today. Catch Surf Beater Boards: Worth it?

July 13th, 2011 by John Zanussi

The summer time in New York is the absolute best time to be hanging on the beach but unfortunately the waves usually suck. This all changes once hurricane season ramps up in late August and September but the months leading up to that usually consist of sloppy windswell in the waist high range. Having a board in your quiver to make surfing these conditions fun isn’t something most surfers have so we ride what we have and make the most of it. Over the winter I started seeing adverts for a company called Catch Surf and their Beater boards. It’s sort of in the middle of a high-end bodyboard and a soft-top board for beginners. My question is, should I go and buy one to use on those summer days where the waves are crap and is it worth it? More »

Defunkify Your Wetsuit

May 13th, 2011 by John Zanussi

The waster is warming up around here on the East Coast and a lot of us have already begun shedding some of the thicker rubber. Before you stow away your winter suit and gear for the summer it’s probably a good idea to give it a good cleaning. The guys over at Korduroy.tv put together this great “how to” video that shows how to remove the stank and funk from your wetsuit. More »

WhiskeyMilitia Surf Day

April 27th, 2011 by John Zanussi

WhiskeyMilitia.com is definitely the best website for buying quality gear for super cheap. I don’t even want to know how much money I’ve spent on that site over the past three and a half years but that number is going to increase today. Usually on the site they have an assortment of surf, skate, and snowboard gear but today from 12pm to 3pm EDT, it will be all surf gear. On their Facebook page they say they’ll have brand new 2011 products, $20 surfboards, $1 wetsuits, and much more. I already saw some analog boardshorts and 5mm Xcel 5 finger gloves for $1 on there this morning, so who knows what else they’ve got for the rest of the day!   The 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach kicked off yesterday and with all the world’s top surfers surfing in round one, I’m sure you were wondering what boards some of them had under their feet. Channel Islands posted to their blog the quivers for the guys that ride their boards and we’ve got a look at what Pat Guadaskas, Kelly Slater, Jordy Smith, Taylor Knox, Bobby Martinez, and Dane Reynolds will be ridding. Sun Bum Sunscreen “Protect Your Lazy Ass”

April 13th, 2011 by John Zanussi

The fine people over at Sun Bum were nice enough to send me a few samples of their new sun block. I was afraid I wouldn’t get to try it out here in New York for another 2 months until summer but I made a trip to Puerto Rico last week and had a chance to give the Bum a try in the hot Puerto Rican sun.
