Surfrider NYC Photo Exhibit

March 13th, 2010 by John Zanussi

On April 22nd, Surfrider NYC will be holding a Photo Exhibit at Fontana’s on the lower east side. The event will feature the photo art of Allison Box along with a bunch of giveaways and raffles. Thanks to the guys behind the NY Surf Film Festival, they will also be showing last year’s viewers choice film, Out of Place and A Pleasant Surprise. On top of all that there will be a preview for this year’s NYSFF, more photos and videos from local photographers, including Matt Clark, and a video presentation from the NYC Chapter of Surfrider. While all this is going on upstairs, there will be a performance by Imaginary Weapons and another TBA band, downstairs along with a DJ, so you can get your dance party on. If you are in or around NY on April 22nd, you should definitely make your way to this event as it will be a full night of good people and good fun. More details below. More »

Help Chile with a Donation to Save The Waves Coalition

March 11th, 2010 by John Zanussi

Save The Waves is a non-profit organization, similar to Surfrider, that sets out to help preserve the surfing coastline and marine environment. With the devastating earthquake in Chile, a few weeks ago, Save The Waves has a team of people at the epicenter helping out with relief efforts. They have also sent doctors and medics along with supplies down to Chile to help out. Save The Waves is taking donations and every little bit helps. If you want to do your part and help out the people in need, you can donate on Save The Waves’ website. More »

New York Surf Film Festival 2010

March 6th, 2010 by John Zanussi

The New York Surf Film Festival is coming back in September, for it’s 3rd year. Being from New York, I had the privilege of attending last year’s event and watching a few surf flicks. The NYSFF is mostly about showcasing local and independent and attending the event really gives you a good chance to experience what the New York surf scene is all about. The founders of the event work hard year round to get the most out of the festival, whether it’s selecting the screening panel, screening movies, finding sponsors or promoting the event. Just last week, the 2010 screening panel was announced and the submission period was opened and will be open until May 15th, 2010. The official announcement on the NYSFF website: “The New York Surf Film Festival is pleased to announce its official 2010 Screening Panel. The 2010 Screening Panel is made up of both international and local surfers with a wide range of credentials ranging from magazine editor to filmmaker, recognized artist, surfboard shaper, local surf shop owner and more. The panel will judge the NYSFF 2010 Official Selections across a growing categories list this year including, but not limited to: Best Feature, Best Short, Best Cinematography, Best Musical Score, and Best Animation.” The dates for this year’s event are September 24th – 26th 2010 and like the past two years, will be held at Tribeca Cinemas. You can see the full lineup of this year’s screening panel on NYSFF’s website. We will keep you updated on any news about the NYSFF and SURFBANG will be attending the event in September to bring you exclusive news, photos and interviews from the people involved. More »

California Love

February 18th, 2010 by John Zanussi

Valentine’s weekend in Cali went off with some super back-to-back swells and perfect conditions. There were high pressure systems that came close enough to give Cali plussing swell but also stayed far enough away for warm, clear, sunny skies with light winds. I’m sure there were a lot of upset ladies in Cali that Sunday, but they better know the deal when it comes to surfing. Check out the dope pictures below of a few California locals, including Taylor Knox, Nat Young, and Wardo ripping it up.   With the ASP world tour about to start in 10 days many of the top surfers are getting ready to ship out to Australia for the first contest of the year. For Brett Simpson, this will be his rookie year on tour coming in ranked number 37. 2009 proved to be a successful year for Brett, as he finished in 10th on the WQS, had a victory at the U.S. Open at his home break, and even made SURFBANG’s list of top rookies in 2010.
