NY Loves NY // A Sandy Fundraiser

March 22nd, 2013 by John Zanussi

Tomorrow night a friend of mine is hosting a very great fundraiser to raise funds for Hurricane Sandy victims. The event doesn’t have much to do with surfing but as you all should know we’re based out of Long Island and a lot of our friends and loved ones were effected by the storm this past October. The fundraiser will take place at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden in Astoria, Queens and along with great drink specials there will be a silent art auction, great raffles and more. The best part, a good amount of the proceeds will be donated to a handful of local charities. More »

Hurricane Leslie Photo Dump

September 13th, 2012 by John Zanussi

September in New York is, was, and forever will be my favorite month of the year. Warm water, amazing weather, and usually great waves. Last year Hurricane Katia provided the East Coast, and more importantly, the Quiksilver Pro New York, with a ton of great waves. This year’s wave maker was Hurricane Leslie and she did a fantastic job at delivering the goods. Leslie sent swell from Puerto Rico to the Canadian Maritimes and everywhere in between. Lucky for us here in New York we had a week or so worth of waves with a few days of offshore winds making for some great conditions. Picking and choosing my days to not go into work I was able to score a handful of good sessions and take some photos. More »

September 11th, 2001

September 11th, 2012 by John Zanussi

It was 11 years ago today that the most devastating and tragic event ever to happen on U.S. soil took place. I just want to make sure everyone takes a few minutes to remember and give thanks to the many men and women that lost their lives on that day. There are a lot of stories that recap experiences of that infamous day, but there is one that really stuck out in my mind that was on Surfline.com a week or so after 9/11 and I thought I’d share it. April 27th, 2012 by John Zanussi

Most all surf videos you see on the internet these days are uploaded to either YouTube or Vimeo. Vimeo has taken their videos to the next level by creating the Vimeo Festival + Awards. An annual event that started in 2010, it is a multi-day event here in New York city with workshops, talks, screenings, and you guessed it, awards. This year Vimeo has added Action Sports to the list of categories and in the pool of nominees are two really cool surf videos. More »

Somewhere Near Tapachula NYC Screening

March 8th, 2012 by John Zanussi

Somewhere Near Tapachula is a great documentary created by Australian filmmakers Jonno Durrant and Stefan Hunt. Fresh off releasing their first film, Surfing 50 States, Jonno and Stefan had an offer from fellow Australians Pam and Alan Skuse to volunteer at their orphanage in Tapachula Mexico. Through surfing, Mission Mexico helps care for children who have been abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned. When Jonno and Stefan returned from Tapachila they had a ton of footage and put together Somewhere Near Tapachula. Although the film has been out for about two years it will be screened  in New York City on Saturday, March 31st to help raise money for Mission Mexico. More »
