After this morning’s trials, which were held in some rather crappy conditions here in Long Beach, we have the final list of surfers that will be competing in the Quiksilver Pro New York. Floridian, Asher Nolan was the big winner as he advanced over 15 other surfers in the trials, granting him a spot in the main event. There were a few guys I was pulling for to win the trials including late entry Aaron Cormican, trials for the trials winner Leif Engstrom, and not only the runner-up this morning but the guy I think surfed the best out there, Keanu Asing. It’s a bummer to see those guys loose but I’m stoked for Asher as this is his first crack at a World Tour event. Although he isn’t going up against Kelly Slater in his first heat as New York’s Balaram Stack is, Asher still has to face Mick Fanning and Heitor Alves in his round one heat.

Travis Logie who was granted the wildcard spot and made it all the way to the semi-finals at the Billabong Pro Tahiti was in the trials this morning but was knocked out in the semis. That doesn’t mean his hopes at surfing here in New York are over though because current world ranked number 2, Jordy Smith has officially withdrawn from the Quiksilver Pro New York due to a rib injury he suffered in Tahiti. It’s unfortunate to see Jordy withdraw, as it’s tough to stay in the world title race after losing momentum from an injury but at the same time I’m stoked for Travis.

Also out due to injury is Dusty Payne. Dusty is suffering from knee laceration and I’m not sure how long he plans on being out for. Taking his spot is Cory Lopez. Cory has surfed in every event this year due to absence of Dane Reynolds but Dane is slotted to surf here in New York.

With the mid-year cutoff happening after this contest, there are a handful of guys that have been on tour for a while that need a good result to remain on tour. According to Surfline’s preview of the event, this is the rundown: Tiago Pires needs a 13th, Adam Melling needs a 9th, CJ Hobgood needs a 9th, Cory Lopez needs a 5th, Gabe Kling needs a 3rd, Freddy Patacchia needs a runner-up finish, and Bobby Martinez needs a runner-up finish.

The opening ceremony of the Quiksilver Pro New York will take place tomorrow morning (9/5) at 11am and a call will be made at 7am for a possible 8am start. There is some building windswell on tap for tomorrow but with an incoming swell from Hurricane Katia set to arrive later in the week I’m sure they’ll wait to get started until the waves pick up.

Make sure to keep it locked right here and on quiksilverpro.com for all the action this week. Below are the round 1 heat matchups.
