Day one of the Quiksilver Pro New York is in the books. Although a lay day was the call for today there was plenty of action that went down at the event site here in Long Beach. The opening ceremonies took place at 11am with Peter Mel introducing a handful of the pros, followed by a prayer and some live music from Quiksilver’s Hawaiian ambassadors Mel Pu’u and Titus Kinimaka. Afterwards, the day was filled with a few expression session heats followed by a tow-at session.
Even early this morning the beach at National Blvd was jam packed with people.
A lot of the pros were on the beach this morning for the opening ceremonies.
Matt Wilkinson, New York’s Balaram Stack, 10 time world champ Kelly Slater, and Freddy Patacchia.
Titus Kinimaka and Mel Pu’u played a couple songs to wrap up the opening ceremonies.
Balaram went out for a free surf immediately after the opening ceremonies and put on a show for the crowd.
Austrailan, Bede Durbidge was also out there throwing his tail around.
Once the expression session started, Jadson Andre was taking every opportunity to boost up and out.
Hetior Alves showing the crowd the bottom of his board on the inside.
Freddy Patacchia was all over the lineup surfing like a mad man and the proof is in the photos below.
Even after the expression session started, Bede Durbidge refused to paddle in from his free surf. I would’ve stayed out there too if I was throwing down like this.
It’s no secret that Balaram knows the ins and outs of the waves in Long Beach as he was throwing tail on almost all his turns.
Freddy P making his way down the line via the air.
Still on the same wave from above, Freddy laid down this monster slash to finish it off.
Damien Hobgood looked in form throughout the entire expression session.
Another one of Freddy? Yep.
C.J. Hobgood was getting radical on the inside.
Not to be outdone by his brother, Damo takes one to the inside and digs it in on his rail.
Maybe it’s because today is his birthday, but with the way Balaram was surfing it’s not a longshot to say he’s got a chance at winning this contest.
Mick Fanning was having some trouble on his new bright blue board in the beginning of the session but he started throwing down eventually.
