Billabong’s Heat Analyzer

Every year the webcasts of the World Tour contests seem to get a little better. Whether it’s higher quality feeds, quicker replays, heats on demand, or just overall better coverage of the events, it has definitely come a long way from a few years ago. With the companies looking for new ways to get people watching the contests it’s not uncommon for them to try out new technologies. We saw it earlier in the year at the Quiksilver Pro Bells Beach when the pros had the option to wear a small GPS chip in their jerseys that tracked their every movement and speed in real-time. This time around in Tahiti, is introducing the Heat Analyzer.

Unlike the GPS chips at the Bells competition the Heat Analyzer doesn’t require the surfers to do anything extra. This new feature gives us, the viewer, a timeline for each surfer during any given heat and has pinpoints for all their scored waves and wipeouts along with any replays and interviews. If you missed a heat in the past, you’d have to watch a very abbreviated highlight clip of the heat or just be stuck looking at the results score sheet. Now you can watch entire heats and skip to the most important parts with the click of your mouse.

It’ll be interesting to see if this sticks around as a feature for all the webcasts in the future. As with anything new, they will probably test it out during the rest of the Billabong Pro Tahiti and see if it makes sense to do again at other competitions.

Either way, you should head on over to BillabongPro.com and give the new Heat Analyzer a try because it’s pretty rad.
