Dane Reynolds, who finished 4th overall in the rankings last year will have to do some extra work in 2011 to keep himself in the running for a world title. Earlier this week, ASP reported that Dane has dropped out of the 2011 Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast because he is still recovering from knee surgery that he had in mid January.

Reynolds suffered a knee injury in December while on the North Shore but still managed to compete in the Billabong Pipeline Masters. We’re not sure of the severity of his injury or the surgery but Quiksilver’s Michael Crawley told Australia’s Coastal Watch, “The good news is that it’s not an ACL injury. Once the damage is repaired he’ll be back in better form than before.”. So that’s good news. Dane should be back in the water and surfing sometime in March, which means he’ll be ready for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in April.

Taking Dane’s place in the Quiky Pro is none other then Floridian and 10 year World Tour veteran Cory Lopez. Cory missed out on qualifying for the 2011 tour by one place which makes him the first alternative. I’m sure Mr. Lopez is super excited to have another shot at surfing on tour considering, that throughout his career he’s finished in the Top 15 8 times and his highest finish was a 3rd place in 2001.

The waiting period for the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast starts this Saturday February 26th and runs through March 9th. We’ll keep you updated on the event here but for the live webcast and live updates check out the event website at quiksilverpro.com.au.
