There have been rumors milling around the past couple weeks that when the ASP released the schedule for the 2011 tour that there would be stop in New York on the list. I first read about it earlier this past week on ESM’s website, in a little story about how one of them had overhead a Top 34 surfer speaking about the possibility of the ASP bringing a World Tour Event to the East Coast and more specifically, New York.At the time of reading, the thought of the top surfers in the world competing at the same break where I go and surf when it’s good was somewhat comical. Just being in Puerto Rico for the Rip Curl Pro Search,  it was hard to imagine an event of that size and importance taking place here on the beaches of New York. If it did happen it would be insane for the New York surf community. In recent years, New York has gained more and more cred as a legit location for surfing and bringing a world tour event would help to solidify that.

In a recent article on ESPN.com, they got in contact the Public Information Officer for the City of Long Beach, Mary Giabalvo, who mentioned that a global endemic company is interested in bringing the tour to New York. He also went on to say, ”We met with them two days ago, so nothing has been confirmed, but they have approached the city of Long Beach about holding an ASP event. We have to weigh all the options of how, where, and when.”

With the release of the 2011 ASP World Tour schedule, there have been some minor changes, like Billabong moving their Brazil event from Santa Catarina to Rio de Janiero. But if you take a look at the 6th stop on tour, you’ll notice a major change, between the dates August 31st and September 9th, a contest will take place at East Coast, United States of America. Whether the ASP has selected a handful of locations along the east coast and is feeling out each one for consideration or New York is the lone candidate, there will definitely be a contest on the right coast and it will take place smack dab in the heart of the Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Either way, it is super exciting to see that the pros are acknowledging the fact that then can score great contestable waves outside of the locations they’ve surfed for years and also the fact that New York is on the list.
