hurley pro 2010 lower trestles heat draw 610x267 2010 Hurley Pro Trestles Preview

The 2010 Hurley Pro at Trestles starts this Sunday September 12th. This will be the first event with the new ASP World Tour’s Top 34 Format. We’ve got the scoop on the new format, the first round heat draws, and thoughts on the pros below.Trestles is always an exciting contest to watch, as Lowers is such a high performance wave. Guys are going to be throwing their tails all over the place, flying in the air, and once in a tucking into a barrel. This is one of my favorite events on tour and I’m looking forward to seeing how the new format is going to work out for the guys who didn’t get cut.

With the new format and the cut after the last contest, the contests for the rest of the year will only have 34 surfers plus two wild-cards. For the Hurley Pro, the wild cards will be upcoming grom Kolohe Andino and Hurley team rider Rob Machado.

There are so many guys that are on fire right now, you cannot count anyone in the top 10 out. Andy Irons is coming off a huge win in Tahiti, beating out CJ Hobgood in the final. Last years world champ and also last year’s winner at Trestles, Mick Fanning is currently #6 in the world and hungry for a win. Dane Reynolds was last year’s runner up at Trestles and is #4 in the rankings. The current number 1, Jordy Smith already has a win at his home break of J-Bay this year along with a couple other WQS wins. And of course, Kelly Slater. Slates is number two you know Kelly is really starting to think about that 10th world championship. He’ll have some work to do though because he’s got wild card Kolohe Andino, who just won the Unsound Junior Pro the other day in New York in the first round matchup and Trestles is Kolohe’s home break. We all know what has happened with Slater and wild cards. I can go on and on about who is hot right now and who could win, but the truth is, that anyone of the guys still on tour can take down this contest.

The new format which will take place for the first time ever at the Hurley Pro, will work like this:
Rd 1: 12 three-man heats, 1st advances to Round 3, 2nd and 3rd to Round 2
Rd 2: 12 man-on-man heats, 1st to Round 3, 2nd is Equal 25th place
