The Hungtington Beach kid has done it again. Brett Simpson took down South African and current world number 1, Jordy Smith, in the final heat of the US Open of Surfing this past Sunday to win his second consecutive title.

Thanks to the event’s main sponsors, Hurley, Nike 6.0, and Converse, the 25 years old, Brett Simpson, was handed another check for $100,000 for first place.

“Last year barely sank in and now I won this year,” Simpson said. “It’s so hard to imagine it all over again because you have to stay consistent and surf so many heats. Luckily I zoned everything out and tried not to worry about the points or the money and that’s when I have competed the best. To be at home with so many friends and family, I’ve enjoyed it so much. To win out here two years in a row is unimaginable.”

The waves this year weren’t the nearly as big as they were last year but the consistent 2-4 foot surf provided enough for all the competitors to put on an amazing show. The surfers weren’t the only one’s making a scene though. The US Open this year saw competitions in BMX and skateboarding along with a ton of concerts and even a fashion show.

One of the things I enjoyed the most besides the actual surfing was the actual webcast. The technology to stream these contests seems to be getting better and better and the stream for the US Open was excellent. Between the high definition video and the great commentating by the guys in the booth, watching the entire event was a treat. If only all the stops on tour were this good.
