Kelly Slater Wins 2013 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast

March 13th, 2013 by Samantha Rupert

If you happened to miss finals day at the 2013 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, you should be kicking yourself. Following a series of uneventful lay days at Snapper Rocks, the contest moved down to Kirra for its abundant, near-perfect, spitting barrels and a series of finals that kept everyone on the edge of their seat. It was in Kirra’s classically hollow tubes that Kelly Slater ousted Joel Parkinson and snatched the first victory of the season. More »

The 2013 ASP World Tour Preview

March 4th, 2013 by Samantha Rupert

Last year proved to be an insane time for surfing. It was the first time Joel Parkinson ever won a world title, beating out 11x World Champion super-athlete Kelly Slater. On the women’s side, Carissa Moore fell off the grid and Stephanie Gilmore took advantage of the absence by winning her fifth world title. The 2012 tour marked a shift in the surf industry. The world inhaled as the ASP announced it would be selling media rights for the 2014 tour. In November, Nike announced that it would be transferring its surfers to Hurley, and in an inevitable tragedy, Billabong also declared bankruptcy. But 2012 is done and this year’s tour is going to be a wild ride. Take a look at some of the factors that could make the 2013 ASP World Tour one for the books. More »

Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico (23 Photos)

February 20th, 2013 by John Zanussi

For the second time in a couple years Rip Curl has brought an ASP contest to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. Back in 2010 it was the world tour event that saw pumping waves at Middles, the passing of Andy Irons, and Kelly Slater win his 10th world title. The most recent event wrapped up last week and although it didn’t have the huge moments that 2010 brought us, this year’s 4-star event, which was held at Jobos in Isabella was a not only fun but successful and proves to me that Puerto Rico should be seriously considered as a permanent spot on the ASP world tour. During my time in Rico, I met up with rock-star photographer Mohammed Raoof of Ecliptic Visuals and he did what he does best and captured all that Jobos and the surfers had to offer with his camera. February 13th, 2013 by John Zanussi

A huge congrats to 23 year-old Florida native Cody Thompson for winning the 2013 Rip Curl Pro. The waves weren’t the best they could be but what a great event it turned out to be. With the success of the 2010 Rip Curl Pro, which was a world tour event and now this year’s 4 star contest I’m hoping to see the ASP do something in Puerto Rico every year. More »
