When I hear the name Greg Noll, the first thing to pop into my head is the infamous picture of him standing on the beach in front of macking Pipeline (see above). Noll was known as Da Bull and is one of surfing’s original badasses. He was was one of the first guys to consistently charge big waves in the ’60s and he’s even credited as the first one to surf outside reef Pipeline. To differentiate himself from other guys in the water he started wearing black and white stripped shorts. Jump to present time and Da Bull has teamed up with Billabong to create the Greg Noll Collection which includes a modern version of those old, now signature, surf trunks.
The collection includes a handful of retro looking t-shirts, two tank tops, a pair of shorts and two pairs of baggies. The standout piece of the line is obviously the black and white “Jailhouse” boardshorts. They’re simple, clean, and just real cool looking. Made with modern boardshort technology and stretch material they still have that old school 60’s look. You might not actually be as badass as Greg Noll but now you can wear his trunks.
Along with the collection, Billabong is auctioning off 200 collectors edition pairs of the shorts all numbered and signed by Greg Noll himself. Check out the auction at ebay.com/billabonggregnoll.
If you’re not down with the auction you can still pick up pieces from the collection at your local retailer or online at billabong.com.
