Island Surfboards // Local Shaper Legacy
The south shore of Long Island is rich in surfing history. As a sport, and more importantly, a lifestyle, surfing has been gaining popularity since the mid-1960s. Over the years, many local surfing families developed reputations for quality surfboard shaping. Their shaping legacies were handed down from generation to generation. But Tommy Grimes, the 22-year-old founder of Island Surfboards in Massapequa, has a more unconventional story. He didn’t inherit a shaping legacy, he’s building his own. More »

Kelly Slater’s Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Quiver
The buzz around whether or not Kelly Slater would be retiring dropped off not long after the 2012 tour ended. The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast is just around the corner and with Kelly’s name listed in the heat match-ups and the quiver preview by Channel Islands it’s safe to say that Kelly will be competing this year. Check out what he’ll be riding at Snapper Rocks. More »
Dusty Payne’s Tahiti Quiver
Dusty Payne missed the first four events of the this year’s ASP World Tour with an ankle injury. When the injury first happened Dusty wasn’t sure of when he’d be back in competition form but that time is now. Although not full recovered, he will be surfing at the Billabong Pro Tahiti in the second heat against Taj Burrow and Damien Hobgood. Dusty’s board sponsor, JS Industries, posted a couple of shots of his eleven board quiver that he has to choose from for the Tahiti event. Also below is a video of Dusty talking about his injury, recovery process, and the tour. More »
Kelly Slater’s 2012 Bells Quiver
The Rip Curl Pro Bells contest starts up in a couple of days and the fine people over at Channel Islands Surfboards have granted us all a look at Kelly Slater’s quiver. The small differences in these six boards wouldn’t matter much to any normal surfer but to the 11 time world champ every 1/8 inch matters More »
Kelly Slater’s Pipeline Quiver
Rounds one and two of the Billabong Pipe Masters are completed and round 3 hits the water today. If the conditions are anything like yesterday’s double to triple overhead waves we’ll probably see most guys riding boards well over 6 feet long again. Not Kelly Slater though. Yesterday during the webcast, Slates mentioned that he’d probably be out there riding a 5’11″. The guy is a nut. More so, the 11 time world champ only has one board over 6 foot in his quiver for Pipe. Take a look at the boards he’ll be choosing from before his round 3 heat starts today. More »
Catch Surf Beater Boards: Worth it?
The summer time in New York is the absolute best time to be hanging on the beach but unfortunately the waves usually suck. This all changes once hurricane season ramps up in late August and September but the months leading up to that usually consist of sloppy windswell in the waist high range. Having a board in your quiver to make surfing these conditions fun isn’t something most surfers have so we ride what we have and make the most of it. Over the winter I started seeing adverts for a company called Catch Surf and their Beater boards. It’s sort of in the middle of a high-end bodyboard and a soft-top board for beginners. My question is, should I go and buy one to use on those summer days where the waves are crap and is it worth it? More »

The 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach kicked off yesterday and with all the world’s top surfers surfing in round one, I’m sure you were wondering what boards some of them had under their feet. Kelly’s Quiver for the 2011 Quiksilver Pro Snapper Rocks
Even though it wasn’t officially announced that Kelly Slater would be surfing on the 2011 tour, everyone kind of knew he was going to, especially with the way he reacted to the Quiksilver Pro in New York. But, according to his main board sponsord, Channel Islands, it is officially official (a little redudundent?). Not only that, but they’re giving us a look into Mr. 10 time World Champ’s quiver for the first contest of the year. More »
