Thanks to an email from a reader, I think we’ve solved the mystery behind those funky wetsuits being worn by Hurley sponsored surfers at the US Open of Surfing. The answer, an artist named James Marshall aka Dalek.

Apparently Dalek has been close to the guys at Hurley since the early days of the company and it hasn’t been until recently that things have became more official. Last summer, when Nike opened up their 225 Forest store in Laguna Beach which includes Nike 6.0, Hurley, Converse and Nike SB all under one roof, there was an unnoticeable wall mural painted by Dalek.

This summer a full blown collaboration has taken place in the form of Hurley gear. It looks like the first glimpse of it came in form of the wetsuits at the US Open. Now there is a whole line of Hurley Phantom boardshorts with his artwork on them. There are also photos of his work painted onto Hurley team rider surfboards. Maybe Hurley will start selling the custom painted wetsuits, but who would really wear those things?

If you’re looking to pick up a pair of baggies, check out Hurley’s online store. Also, if you’re into Dalek’s work, you can check out his blog at dalekart.com/blog.
