Rob Machado / Frame of Mind

August 31st, 2012 by Samantha Rupert

Rob Machado has always been one of my favorite surfers, not just because he always marched to the beat of a different drummer, but because he was fearless. Fearless about stepping off the tour and out of the commercial spotlight. Fearless about shaping boards with unconventional, seemingly useless tails, and still getting barreled in them. And fearless about experimenting with music. And after I met him last year, I began to realize he had the right idea about life in general: do everything you love and don’t forget your roots. More »

DIY Surfboard Bike Rack

August 31st, 2012 by Samantha Rupert

I would be more likely to saw off my arm while attempting this than actually complete this awesome DIY surfboard bike rack, but it’s definitely something I would like to try. I wish riding a bike around eastern Long Island was a bit more practical because I love the open air and other cars definitely distract me more than my own thoughts. Take a look at this video and see if you can channel your inner-handyman to make this surfboard bike rack out of some everyday tools, rubber cement and PVC piping. Then maybe I’ll contract you to help me […] More »

Garrett McNamara Talks About World Record Wave

August 31st, 2012 by Samantha Rupert

Garrett McNamara made the Guinness Book of World Records last year by riding this crazy 78-foot wave off the coast of Nazare, Portugal. In fact, the Portuguese government invited him to surf it! For something so crazy, McNamara talks about it so nonchalantly. “When I rode that wave, I had a lot bigger of a wave on my mind. That was just a little warm up.” Really? A 78-foot warm up? In any case, it was one of the nominees for the 2012 Billabong XXL Ride of the Year. More »

Cory Lopez is the Man

August 30th, 2012 by John Zanussi

I was born in the mid-80′s so by the time the late 90′s came around and I had been surfing for a couple of years I had developed a handful of favorite surfers. One of them was and still is Cory Lopez. A Floridian and a true East Coast’er, the guy ripped then and at the ripe ol’ age of 35 still kills it in the water. Here he is on a recent trip to Costa Rica doin’ what he does best. More »

August 30th, 2012 by John Zanussi

There’s no argument that Mark Occhilupo will go down as one of the greatest surfers of all time. The combination of raw power and smooth style is what makes Occy stand out. Oh yeah, and the way he surfs on his backhand. More »

Hurricane Isaac Brings Waves to Alabama

August 29th, 2012 by John Zanussi

The last time we saw any surfing in Alabama it was in Sterling Spencer’s movie Surf Madness. Before making landfall in Louisiana yesterday, Hurricane Isaac spent a few days in the Gulf of Mexico and it was enough to send some little waves to the Alabama coast. Who was there to surf and film? Sterling Spencer and Warren Smith. More »
