Nixon Newton Digital

October 30th, 2009 by John Zanussi

Nixon has done it again with the Newton Digital. How could you not be siked on this fine piece to time telling machinery. I rock out with the normal Newton but this new digital version just takes it to the next level. Telling time on the digital is easier then then analog but it doesn’t matter when they are so dope looking. You can get the Newton Digital in four different colorways from your local shop or Nixon’s website. More »

Mick Fanning Wins the Rip Curl Pro Search 2009 in Portugal

October 29th, 2009 by John Zanussi

Fanning wins his second Rip Curl Search (1st in 2005) against Bede Durbidge. The contest location in Portugal is known for it’s hollow long barrels called Supertubos, similar to Pipeline. Round 3 and the Quarter-finals had the best waves of the event with the large swell. The Semi-finals and Finals had a drop in swell but good enough to see the top three guys battle it out until to the end. In the Semi-finals was Joel vs Bede and Mick vs Owen (wild-card and up and coming star to the ASP Tour next year). Bede won with a 14.60 over Joel’s 13.27 and Mick automatically advanced to the Final by Owen perforating his eardrum in the Quarter-finals against Damien.  Mick won the heat and the contest with a 12.67 over Bede’s 9.87. With this win, Mick is sitting in a pretty good spot for his second world title going into the last event at Pipeline. Joel is still and the only one left in the title race with Mick but needing a 3rd or better at Pipe depending on what Mick does to win. If Mick gets a 2nd or 1st, he clinches the world title. Here are the facts… – Fanning finishes 33rd through a 9th at Pipeline, Parkinson needs a 3rd or better to overtake. – Fanning finishes 5th at Pipeline, Parkinson needs a 2nd or better to overtake. – Fanning finishes 3rd at Pipeline, Parkinson needs win the event to overtake. – Fanning finishes 2nd or better at Pipeline, he will clinch the 2009 ASP World Title. Fanning said. “I’m super pumped. I’m going to go home and relax for a couple of weeks and get ready for Pipe. Hopefully we get some big barrels like we did here and we have a real showdown.” “In a few days when all the dust settles I’ll look back and see that I have come off the ankle injury and a few bad results, so just to get a third and back into form is a huge confidence boost,” Parkinson said. “There is not a great deal of points between me and Mick coming into Pipe so it’s still anybody’s to win.” This is going to be an exciting finish to the ASP World Tour 2009 at the Billabong Pipeline Masters Dec. 8th-20th, to see who will be crown Champion. Check out some pictures from the event at Portugal. More »

Day 9 Highlights of the Rip Curl Search Pro 2009 Portugal

October 28th, 2009 by John Zanussi

The waves were going off in Portugal yesterday, some of the biggest surf they’ve seen there in a long time. Who better then the top surfers in the world to tear it up. There were some giant gaping barrels and these dudes weren’t messing around. Parko, Bede, and Owen Wright all had perfect 10’s and a few others like Fanning had scores in the high 9’s. They ran the contest until it was dark saving the semis and finals to the last day. More »

Surfboard Tracking System

October 28th, 2009 by John Zanussi

I’ve never had any of my boards stolen but I do know of people who have gotten their sticks robbed right from their front lawn. This actually happens a lot, but there is somewhat of a solution brewing out there. A company called SBT has created a way to store all sorts of info electronically in your surfboard. A very small microchip is placed in the foam of a board before it is glassed that will hold information about the shaper, the type of blank, dimensions, fin system, the date the board was made on, etc. The board can then be registered on SBT’s website as your own… kind of like those chips they place in pets these days. You can’t track your board GPS style but it’s better than nothing. More »

Mick Fanning’s green wetsuit in support of Enviroweek

October 26th, 2009 by John Zanussi

Fanning is stepping it up this year in the whole ‘green’ movement. He announced earlier this month that he would be an ambassador for Australia’s Enviroweek. He then went to his sponsor, Rip Curl, and they came up with the idea for him to rock a fresh looking green wetsuit. Not only is the color green but apparently it is made up of some eco friendly materials and is part of Rip Curl’s new foundation called Rip Curl Planet. You can’t buy Fanning’s green suit but there is a whole line of products available on their website. More »
